Appalachia Service Project

Ten days of cold showers, noisy teenagers and sleeping on the floor. Sounds horrible, right? Far from it. ASP gets teens involved in practical hands on ministry of making homes safer warmer and dryer. This year's theme is Handprints in Appalachia.

Our youth group at First United Methodist Church of Alachua, FL invited Vanessa and I along as supervisors. We lead worship at almost every meeting with some help from some new friends of FUMC Cary, NC.

Ness's team reinforced a foundation which will allow the roof to be fixed which will allow the floor to be replaced. My team finished a deck, so that their baby can play on the porch. We also installed new facia board and sofets to insulate the attic. This will help the heating dynamic of the house. Their little one is allergic to the smoke from their wood stove and was sick all winter.

Our teens did a great job on their projects and made a lot of new friends, not just with the kids from Cary, but the staff and adults, as well.
