Appalachia Service Project 2004

Ten days of cold showers, noisy teenagers and sleeping on the floor. Sounds horrible, right? Far from it. ASP gets teens involved in practical hands on ministry of making homes safer warmer and dryer. This year's theme is Building on the Rock.

Again we went with the youth group at First United Methodist Church of Alachua, FL. This year we brought a sound system and video projector. The meetings touched lives and the worship was amazing.

This year my team did some constuction work at the home of a sweet old couple in Tennesee. We poured a concrete landing for a wheelchair ramp that had been built the week before by our old friends from Cary, NC. Edgar has health problems, and Opal cooks lunch for the whole mountain every day. While other teams were enjoying thier pb&j, we were sitting down to green beans, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, and scratch busicuits.

There were a lot of new kids on this trip, but everyone really bonded with each other. Did I mention that we got to see a bluegrass band? Best one in the county! Every one we talked to thought so.

A couple kids gave their hearts to Jesus. There were two healings. And the meeting on the last night was powerful. We met for a prayer vigil in a small church garden to recapture the week's events. As it was ending, I began to play and sing one last song and dismissed the kids. Nobody left. We stayed for another hour praying and worshiping. Teens were kneeling in prayer before the large cross that stood next to me. Chaperones were praying for the kids. The kids were praying for each other. It was a quiet pandamonium in a moonlight garden under the stars of our Creator.
